Dean Winchster is a son, a brother, a hunter, and a drifter. Raised from the age of four to hunt the things that go bump in the night, he isn't really sure what normal even is anymore. His world revolves around the crazy and the fucked up. Werewolves, ghosts, zombies... they're all par for the course, as far as he's concerned. He used to hunt with his father, John, and his brother, Sam, but times have changed. Sam decided the life wasn't for him and headed off to college to find that whole 'normal' thing. The decision did not go over well with their father who told Sam to never come back. After Sam left, John became distant, taking more and more hunts alone. Longer hunts. Further away. So much for family togetherness. Dean's on his own most of the time these days. He tells himself that's how he likes it. |  | |

Dean Winchester was born on January 24, 1979 to John and Mary Winchester in Lawrence, Kansas. He is the couple's first child, four years older than his younger brother Sam. He is named after his maternal grandmother, Deanna Campbell. When he was only four years old on November 2, 1983, his mother Mary was killed in Sam's nursery by the demon Azazel. Infant Sam is saved by the ensuing fire when his father takes him out of his crib and gives him to four-year-old Dean, who then carries him outside while their father unsuccessfully tries to rescue their mother. After that night Dean felt responsible for Sam, and was always given the job to take care of him while they were growing up. Dean's father John raised him and Sam as hunters of the supernatural. During Dean's childhood John would be away "hunting" a week or two at a time, so Dean had to partly raise Sam. [wiki] Always the dutiful soldier, Dean has followed his father's orders to the letter all his life. All he wants in the world is for his family to stick together and to grow up to be a hero just like his dad. His brother, on the other hand, has his own ideas of what their lives should be like and often butts heads with their father. Sam is a star pupil, John wants him to focus on hunting and not school. John wants Sam to run laps and learn to use weapons, Sam wants to join the school soccer team. Sam wants normal, John wants safe. Dean makes it his job to try and keep the peace between the two, smoothing things over as best he can, but it's always a difficult thing to do. In spite of the constant moving around, Sam earns spectacular grades in the schools he attends. Dean is proud, in spite of all his nerd jokes to the contrary. He's put the burden of the majority of the household duties, the hunting, and placating John on his own shoulders so that Sam can have as much 'normal' as he can eke out in their strange life. It's hard, but it's worth it to keep the peace and keep them both happy. Everything changes when Sam turns 19. Sam accepts a full-ride scholarship to Stanford and the fight that results when John is told ends with Sam leaving against his father's wishes. John tells him that if he walks out the door, he should never come back. Heartbroken and torn between the two people who matter most in the world to him, Dean makes the decision to remain in the hunting life with John. That night, against all instinct to the contrary, he drives Sam to the bus station and puts him on a bus to Stanford. They haven't spoken since. | ||

This version of Dean Winchester is being taken from the pre-series time period, shortly after Sam leaves for Stanford. He is 23 years old. He is mistrustful of getting attached to people, figuring he'll just lose them sooner or later. His default setting is a brave front and a cocky attitude in any stressful suituation. Jokes, for him, are a defense mechanism. Of course, he also sometimes just likes to get a rise out of people. Fiercely loyal, he will go right up to the gates of Hell for his family, friends, or someone he loves. He is played as a somewhat closeted bisexual, working like hell to make sure his father never finds out he's ever even looked sideways at another guy while still cheerfully chasing the ladies.
